Important 2026 update

Iceland’s new Visa Act took effect in May 2026, and responsibility for visa services moved from the Directorate of Immigration to Iceland’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs. Processes can change, so confirm the current route before booking a visa appointment.

Which visa do most tourists need?

Indian passport holders normally need a short-stay Schengen visa for an Iceland holiday of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Iceland should normally be the main destination when you apply through the Iceland route.

If your purpose, destination or length of stay is different, your route may also be different.

Use official channels

A sensible application sequence

1

Confirm your route

Check that Iceland is the correct country for your application and find the authorised application channel serving your place of residence.

2

Build a coherent itinerary

Your travel dates, accommodation, transport plan and purpose of visit should tell one clear, consistent story.

3

Prepare and submit

Book the appointment, organise the current checklist, provide biometrics if required and retain your receipt or tracking details.

Documents commonly requested

  • Valid passport and completed application
  • Recent photographs meeting the stated specification
  • Travel medical insurance meeting Schengen requirements
  • Flight reservation or travel plan
  • Accommodation evidence
  • Proof of funds and employment, business or study circumstances

Avoid preventable problems

  • Do not rely on an old checklist copied from a blog or video.
  • Keep names, dates and bookings consistent across documents.
  • Allow time for appointments and processing; do not assume a fixed turnaround.
  • Avoid non-refundable commitments unless you understand the risk.
  • Answer truthfully and provide documents that can be verified.
