India to Iceland Guide · Updated 14 October 2026 · Suggested itinerary

A good 7-day Iceland itinerary from India starts with a choice: see a smaller area properly, or spend most of the holiday moving between hotels. This sample route favours Reykjavík and southern Iceland. It is a planning suggestion, not a fixed tour or a promise that every stop will be accessible.

It works most comfortably with longer daylight and suitable road conditions. Count seven days in Iceland; your international travel from India may need additional days. Before booking, compare the seasons and build your own trip budget.

Customise your one-week Iceland trip

Use this Reykjavík, Golden Circle and South Coast itinerary as the starting point for your own Iceland travel package. Travelling as a couple, with children, with parents or with a group? Send me your dates and priorities, and ask for help adapting the route, overnight bases and food plan.

Choose what suits you

  • Travel style: self-drive, guided day trips from Reykjavík or a private itinerary arranged with a licensed provider.
  • Accommodation: hotels, apartments with a kitchen or family rooms, subject to availability.
  • Food: vegetarian, vegan, Jain or other requirements discussed in advance.
  • Experiences: waterfalls, city time, geothermal bathing and suitable guided activities.

Make the season work for you

Summer: longer sightseeing days and room for more outdoor stops.

Winter: shorter routes, weather flexibility and optional Northern Lights outings when conditions allow. Sightings are never guaranteed.

A slower week: fewer hotel changes, shorter walks and more time for meals and rest.

Want Jökulsárlón? Ask about replacing a city or slow day with an overnight farther east. It needs a different overnight plan; it is not an automatic extra on this route.

What to include in your enquiry

Your seven-day route at a glance

A day-by-day route with breathing room

Day 1 · Arrive and settle into Reykjavík

Keep arrival day light. Arrange your airport transfer, check in and take a short city walk if you feel rested. Hallgrímskirkja, the waterfront and a relaxed dinner are plenty. Avoid collecting a rental car and committing to a long drive when tired after connecting flights.

Day 2 · Explore the capital

Choose a few interests rather than every attraction: architecture at Harpa, a harbour walk, a museum or a swimming pool. This is a useful day to buy supplies, check the forecast and adjust the next stages. Keep any paid activities compatible with opening times and your energy level.

Day 3 · Golden Circle

Plan around Þingvellir, the Geysir geothermal area and Gullfoss. Leave room for walking, meals and weather changes. This sample returns to Reykjavík for the third night; staying farther south is an alternative if it better fits your bookings.

Day 4 · Waterfalls and the South Coast

Travel towards Vík, with Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss as possible stops. Shorten the list if conditions or daylight require it. If you visit Reynisfjara, follow the on-site warnings and official black-beach safety advice. Never treat the shoreline as a safe photo spot.

Day 5 · A slower day around Vík

Enjoy the surrounding coast at a relaxed pace or book one suitable guided activity. This is deliberately not a race to Jökulsárlón and back. If the glacier lagoon is your priority, add an overnight stay farther east and remove another part of this itinerary.

Day 6 · Return west, with a weather buffer

Use the return journey for a missed stop if conditions allow. Otherwise, make this a quieter travel day. An extra day is more useful than an itinerary that depends on every forecast being perfect.

Day 7 · Departure day

Allow time for packing, rental-car return and the airport journey. Follow your airline’s check-in guidance. Keep sightseeing optional; a final attraction should never put the flight at risk.

How to adapt it for winter

Reduce driving and plan around the actual daylight for your dates. A Reykjavík base with guided day trips may suit visitors without winter-driving experience. The South Coast overnight section is optional. Check road conditions and travel alerts before setting out; change or cancel plans when necessary.

Book the essentials, leave the extras flexible

  • Match accommodation check-in times to the route, not just the cheapest room.
  • Confirm cancellation terms for weather-sensitive activities.
  • Plan restaurant meals on city days and carry a simple backup on driving days.
  • Check kitchen equipment before relying on self-catering.
  • Share dietary requirements before a group booking.

Add days before adding distance. North Iceland, the Westfjords and a full Ring Road journey deserve their own time, especially when weather or seasonal access becomes a factor.
