Choose your overnight bases before booking individual hotels. For a first visit from India, the right location can save more effort than a long list of room features. Start with your arrival time, transport choice and the places you most want to see.

In this guide

A simple six-night plan

Our one-week itinerary covers Reykjavík, the Golden Circle and the South Coast without trying to circle the entire country. These bases follow that route; they are planning suggestions rather than reserved rooms.

NightsBaseWhy choose it?
1–3ReykjavíkSettle in, explore the city and take a Golden Circle day trip.
4–5Vík areaGive the South Coast its own time and avoid changing rooms every night.
6Reykjavík or near Keflavík AirportReturn west and choose your final base around the departure time.

Reykjavík: a convenient starting base

The capital offers hotels, guesthouses and apartments in different neighbourhoods. Think about your actual routine: walking to dinner, reaching a tour pickup point, parking a car or buying groceries. A central address can be convenient without being the best fit for every group.

If you will not drive, compare the property’s location with the exact pickup arrangements for your chosen trips. Ask the operator whether collection is at the hotel, a designated stop or another meeting point. If you will drive, confirm parking availability and charges before booking.

For families or parents, ask about street noise, stairs, lifts and bed arrangements. A map pin and attractive room photograph do not answer those questions. Use Visit Reykjavík’s accommodation directory as a starting point, then check details directly with each property.

Vík and the South Coast: stay near the days you want to enjoy

Two nights near Vík can make the southern section feel less rushed. You can unpack once and adapt the second day to the weather. Check the actual location of accommodation described as being “near Vík”; a countryside stay may require driving for dinner or supplies.

Choose the route first, then compare rooms within a sensible distance of it. Do not extend the driving day just to reach a cheaper bed. If Jökulsárlón is a priority, revise the itinerary and consider an overnight farther east rather than assuming it is an easy extra from every South Coast base.

The regional tourism board’s Vík guide is useful for understanding the area. Check seasonal opening times directly with places you intend to use.

Hotel, apartment or guesthouse?

  • Hotel: ask about breakfast times, reception hours, luggage storage and the bed configuration.
  • Apartment: confirm that the kitchen is private, what equipment is supplied, and how late check-in works.
  • Guesthouse: check whether the bathroom and kitchen are private or shared, and whether there are quiet hours or arrival instructions.

Compare the final total for your whole group, including applicable fees, parking and meals you expect to buy. Check the cancellation deadline and payment terms in the booking’s stated time zone. Keep the property’s contact details and arrival instructions available offline.

Plan your final night around the flight

For an early departure, accommodation near Keflavík Airport may simplify the morning. Verify the actual transfer arrangement: “near the airport” does not necessarily mean walkable or that a shuttle is included. Allow for rental-car return and follow the airline’s check-in advice.

If your flight leaves later, another Reykjavík night may suit you better. Keep the final sightseeing optional and use our airport transfer guide to plan the journey.

Adjust the plan for winter or a slower holiday

A Reykjavík base with selected guided day trips can reduce hotel changes. It still requires a realistic schedule and flexibility when conditions affect trips. Read Iceland without a car, compare the seasons and check SafeTravel before outings.

If familiar meals are a priority, consider a kitchen and plan shopping around your route. Tell restaurants about dietary needs beforehand; our Indian food guide explains the practical questions to ask.
